HIGHLIGHTS | Clerkenwell Design Week 2024
Graham Mercer, Robert Bennett and Louise Spokes attended Clerkenwell Design Week in London. Over 100 design showrooms participated in the event, which also included official exhibition venues, pop-up installations, brand activations, and events. During the festival, our team took a tour by Joe Simpson, Editor, Ceramic Tile Blogger, and self-proclaimed ‘Tile Addict’ and enjoyed reconnecting with familiar faces and industry colleagues including Abet, Arpa, Egger, Greenlam, and Kronospan.
Rearo Marketing Manager, Louise Spokes, recaps some of the highlights and key themes spotted throughout Clerkenwell Design Week 2024.
Key Themes
- Sustainability
- Authenticity
- Tradition & Innovation
Sustainability
The keyword at Clerkenwell Design Week 2024 was ‘Sustainability,’ with many companies proudly displaying their eco-credentials. We stopped at Kinnarps for refreshments and respite from the rain and learned of their office furniture’s ‘low life cycle cost’. We saw tiles made from fishing nets at Coldharbour, and chairs made from recycled old insulin pens, keyboards and car parts by Wehlers. Arguably, some of the best examples of sustainable product design were seen in the Danish Collection at Paxton Locker House, including Kuma, composite washbasins and Luups trays.
The sustainable message also carried through to some of the promotional materials given away at the stands. At Abet, we picked up a pencil with seeds in the tip to plant after use, and at many stalls, we noticed flyers or signs with QR codes instead of printed brochures.
Authenticity
Another key theme we noticed was authenticity, even in commercially manufactured products. There was a nod towards Wabi Sabi, The Japanese Art of Impermanence, which celebrates deliberate imperfections. One example of this was the imperfect lines and brushstroke droplets that outlined the materiality of the colour on the SEGNI Su Pigmenti tiles by Lea Ceramiche.
Tradition & Innovation
Traditional artistry with innovative high-tech technology and manufacturing processes was seen throughout the event. During the tile tour, we learned of the industrial-scale processes involved in making authentic-looking, traditional-style tiles similar to those used hundreds of years ago. Using the latest technology, manufacturers can now produce a product that looks like natural material such as stone, wood or even leather but performs even better than the real thing.
Innovation highlights at CDW
- ‘Cooking RAK‘, the prestigious RedDot Design Award-winning Porcelain tile worktop at RAK Ceramics, that’s alsoan induction hob. Our team was impressed when a stainless steel pot of water was placed on the countertop, which stayed cool, but the water in the pot boiled!
- The Mythical Forest Salon by Schotten & Hansen and Kit Kemp Design Studio. The installation demonstrated a magnetic product treatment for floors. The mosaic of coloured magnetic wooden floor tiles could be mixed, matched, and moved around to make intricate floor patterns. The product offered endless design possibilities. As the tiles didn’t need to be glued down, they could also be collected up and reused in a different location later, increasing the product’s life span.
- A tap with a hot and cold water temperature gauge by Blanco at the German pavilion.
- HyBrick – the world’s first 100% Hydrogen-fired clay brick. Plus, self-cleaning hydrophobic roof tiles at EH Smith in a range of stunning colours. The rainwater runs off them in sheets rather than droplets.
- Luups food trays, made from 50% PP plast and 50 % wood – a waste product from certified trees. The trays are designed to be carried with one hand, ideal for functions and events where you still have a hand free to shake hands.
- A tile panel with a glossy, high-resolution decor designed by artificial intelligence at Ricchetti.
Bathroom Décor Trends
Traditionally, the UK market has been very conservative, favouring whites and greys in bathrooms. However, this has changed in recent years, and now there is a demand for bolder bathrooms (think of footballer’s wives or the recent mob wife aesthetic!)
Bathroom décor trends we noticed at CDW:
- Dramatic blues and greens remain popular design choices for bathrooms, as seen at Tonalite
- Warm neutrals and saturated pastels – also seen at Tonalite
- Grout as the hero, including contrasting or complimentary coloured grout as demonstrated at Quintessenza
- Marble used floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall for a showstopping look, as demonstrated at RAK Ceramics.
Product Displays
We’re always looking for new ways to improve our showrooms, displays and sampling process. There were a few ideas that stood out among the shows:
- ‘My Abet’ – a build-your-own style swatch pack service and sample book with replaceable swatches – no more wasted swatches. You only take what you’re interested in.
- The variety of Moodboards including those at La Fabrica Ava showing the ideal colours and textures to go with the wall and floor panels.
- RAK Panel displays with clear technical information.
- Samples with backing boards featuring roomset images on the reverse, showing how they would look in situ.
Conclusion
Clerkenwell Design Week 2024 showcased innovation, tradition, and sustainability within the design industry. It was an invaluable opportunity for Rearo to reconnect with industry colleagues and explore the latest trends and technologies.
The event highlighted the importance of sustainability, with numerous exhibitors demonstrating eco-friendly practices and products. This focus on sustainability is a crucial trend that is shaping the future of design, aligning with our values and aspirations at Rearo.
The creative use of technology, like AI-designed tile panels and magnetic wooden floor tiles, points to an exciting future for design.
Overall, Clerkenwell Design Week 2024 was a rich source of inspiration and ideas, reinforcing the interconnectedness of different design sectors and the shared drive towards creating beautiful, sustainable, and functional spaces. We look forward to integrating these insights into our own product ranges and continually enhancing our offerings to meet our customers’ evolving needs and preferences.

Spathroom – the Spa-Inspired Bathroom Trend
Spathroom – the Spa-Inspired Bathroom Trend
The pandemic’s impact on our lives has been profound, altering how we work and even how we relax at home. One notable trend is the desire to create spa-like bathrooms, or ‘spathrooms,’ within our homes. During the confinement of Covid-19, many people found solace in enhancing their living spaces to foster a sense of peace and relaxation. As we continue to navigate the challenges of the cost-of-living crisis, the spathroom trend can be achieved without breaking the bank and creating a luxurious retreat.
What is a ‘Spathroom’?
A ‘Spathroom’ is a term for a spa/bathroom hybrid that promotes serenity and calm—and the best part is, it’s a lot easier to create than you may think. With a few simple changes, you can transform your bathroom into a serene oasis. The essence of a spathroom lies in its ability to provide a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. The pandemic has underscored the importance of self-care and mental well-being, prompting many to seek ways to incorporate these elements into their daily lives. Spa-inspired bathrooms became a popular solution, offering calming aesthetics and serene atmospheres that can help you unwind and recharge.
Here are some tips to help you create a spathroom on a budget:
Opt for Neutral Tones
A vital feature of a spa-inspired bathroom is its soothing colour palettes. Soft, neutral tones like whites, beiges, and greys can create a calm and serene environment. These colours are relaxing and timeless, ensuring your bathroom remains stylish for years to come.
Focus on Lighting
Proper lighting is crucial in creating a spa-like atmosphere. Avoid harsh, bright lights and opt for softer, more diffused lighting. Installing dimmer switches allows you to control the brightness and set the perfect mood. Adding candles or LED strip lights can further enhance the relaxing ambience.
Incorporate Natural Elements
Bringing elements of nature into your bathroom can significantly enhance its calming vibe. Add plants that thrive in humid environments, such as ferns or wood and stone, which can also add to the natural, serene feel.
Upgrade Fixtures and Accessories
Small changes can make a big difference. Upgrading your showerhead to a rainfall model or adding a free-standing bath can provide a more luxurious bathing experience. Investing in plush towels, a soft bathrobe, and high-quality bath mats can elevate the spa-like feel.
Marble Shower Panels
Achieving a spathroom on a budget can be done beautifully and effectively with thoughtful planning and intelligent choices. One of the critical elements in creating a luxurious bathroom is the use of high-quality materials that evoke elegance and tranquillity. High-quality materials are where Rearo Laminates’ Selkie shower panels come into play. Selkie panels are available in various marble styles, including Calacatta, Gransasso, Portofino, and bold Palazzo or blue Zaffiro. These panels provide the opulent look of natural marble at a fraction of the cost, making it an accessible option for those wanting to indulge in a spa-like experience without the hefty price tag.
Declutter and organise
A clutter-free space is essential for a spa-like atmosphere. Utilise storage solutions to keep your bathroom tidy and organised. Consider adding shelves, baskets, or cabinets to store toiletries and other essentials out of sight.
By incorporating these elements, you can transform your bathroom into a luxurious spathroom without spending a fortune. The trend of spa-inspired bathrooms is here to stay, driven by our collective need for relaxation and self-care, especially during challenging times. With high-quality, cost-effective solutions like Rearo Laminates’ marble shower panels, achieving a serene, elegant bathroom is within reach, regardless of your budget.

As Rearo delves into the realms of interior design, we draw inspiration from the latest innovations and trends showcased at prestigious events like Salone Del Mobile Milano and many renowned Interior Design Experts. This year our exploration of emerging trends in kitchen and bathroom design for 2024 reveals a landscape rich with possibilities and opportunities for homeowners to create truly remarkable spaces.
Drawing from our observations
it is evident that 2024’s trends are not just about aesthetics and innovation, but also about creating environments that promote relaxation and well-being within the home. From vibrant colour palettes to intricate decorative detailing, the trends we’ve witnessed offer a glimpse into the future of interior design.
Serene Retreats
The focus for 2024 revolves around crafting environments that exude tranquillity and warmth. Whether it’s a luxurious free-standing bath, subtle yet striking tones, or the infusion of natural elements, the goal is to create spaces that promote relaxation and rejuvenation. Warm neutrals, such as creams, beiges, and mushroom tones, take centre stage, evoking a sense of calmness and connection to nature.
Bold Expressions of Colour
While neutrals dominate, bursts of rich, earthy tones are making their presence felt in both the kitchens and bathrooms. Earthy greens, deep blues and shades of burgundy add depth and character. This infusion of colour adds a touch of luxury and sophistication to these spaces.
Functional Luxury
Functionality remains paramount, but with a luxurious twist. Homeowners are increasingly incorporating spa-like features into their bathrooms, such as steam showers, heated floors, and massaging shower heads. The bathroom is no longer just a utilitarian space but a sanctuary for self-care and relaxation.
Elevated Design Elements
Design elements like fluting and slab splashbacks add a touch of sophistication and luxury to both kitchens and bathrooms. Fluted details to cabinetry create visual interest, while slab splashbacks offer a seamless modern look. These design elements elevate the aesthetic appeal of the space, creating a sense of refinement and elegance.
Embracing Natural Materials
The use of natural materials like marble, wood, terracotta, travertine and stone continues to gain prominence in kitchen and bathroom design. The materials infuse the space with warmth and texture, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. From marble countertops and splashbacks to wooden cabinetry, the emphasis is on creating spaces that feel grounded and connected to nature.
The Rise of Black
Dark colours, particularly black, are emerging as a popular choice for both kitchens and bathrooms. Black cabinetry, countertops and fixtures add a touch of drama and sophistication to the space, creating a bold statement. When paired with warmer elements like wood and brass, black creates a striking yet timeless aesthetic.
Innovative Lighting Solutions
Lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the functionality and ambience of both kitchen and bathrooms. From subtle under-cabinet lighting to statement-making pendants, the focus is on creating a layered lighting scheme that adds depth and character to the space. Decorative lighting features serves as both functional elements and stylish accents, elevating the overall design.
Creating Social Spaces
The kitchen is no longer just a space for cooking but a social hub where family and friends gather. Kitchen Islands with integrated seating and storage serve as a focal point, creating a central hub for socialising and entertaining. Banquette seating and split-level countertops add comfort and functionality, merging the boundaries between kitchen and living spaces.
Blurring the lines between Indoors and Outdoors
The integration of natural materials has emerged as a defining trend in 2024. At events like Salone Del Mobile Milano, Rearo witnessed an inspiring array of designs that blend seamlessly with the organic beauty of nature to the sleek modernity of contemporary interiors. From rustic charm to minimalistic elegance, the infusion of materials like terracotta, wood, marble and stone imbues spaces with warmth, character, and a timeless allure.
Maximising Space
With the British bathroom tending not to be very large, maximising space has become a key trend. From compact fixtures to innovative storage solutions like medicine cabinets, homeowners are finding creative ways to make the most of limited spaces. The goal is to create clutter-free and organised spaces that feel open and airy.
A Retake on Medicine Cabinets
A surprising trend making its mark in 2024 is the increasing popularity of medicine cabinets. Traditionally associated with older homes, these compact wall-mounted storage units often double as vanity mirrors, thanks to their mirrored doors. If the phrase ‘medicine cabinet’ suggests outdated wooden boxes from bygone eras, think again. Contemporary medicine cabinets come in a variety of shapes and sizes, boasting stylish designs and premium finishes. Recessed medicine cabinets, in particular, are gaining momentum, offering the appearance of regular mirrors while providing additional storage compared to their counterparts from previous eras. As homeowners increasingly seek extra storage solutions to keep their countertops clutter-free, the resurgence of the medicine cabinet is on the up.
Embracing Imperfection
The trend of Wabi-Sabi celebrates the beauty of imperfection, embracing natural materials and textures. From hand-crafted tiles to artisanal finishes, the focus is on creating spaces that feel authentic and lived in. This emphasis on imperfection adds character and personality to the space, creating a sense of warmth and comfort.
Calming Curves
Similar to interior design, curved elements will remain prominent in kitchen and bathroom aesthetics, celebrated for bringing a sense of harmony to the dynamic atmosphere of contemporary living spaces. While curves are proving to be most obvious in kitchen islands and bathroom vanities, this trend can extend to other areas of your home as well. For example, you might explore using scalloped-edged tiles as a splashback to introduce dimension and flow that echoes the curves present in your kitchen and bathroom design.
Pot Fillers
In 2024, we will see an uptick in the practicality of kitchen design, with the rise of pot fillers emerging as a noticeable trend. These convenient fixtures streamline the process of filling saucepans, eliminating the need to shuttle heavy pots back and forth between the sink and cooker. Ideal for larger families or frequent hosts, pot fillers significantly ease the task of preparing substantial meals, such as hearty pots of pasta. Originating in the early 20th century, their resurgence aligns with a renewed appreciation for traditional English style, although modern iterations cater to a wide range of kitchen aesthetics.
In conclusion, the kitchen and bathroom trends for 2024 are all about creating spaces that prioritise relaxation, functionality, and style. From warm neutrals to bold accents, from innovative lighting solutions to social kitchen islands, these trends reflect a desire for spaces that are both inviting and inspiring. By embracing the latest trends and incorporating elements that resonate with your personal style, homeowners can create kitchens and bathrooms that are truly timeless and transformative.
