Supporting Staff and Careers

BSL Training

Rearo staff sign-up for BSL lessons to support colleague

When Sam Speirs started work as a machine operator, he worried that being deaf would make it difficult for him to communicate with his colleagues. So, members of the Rearo team joined together and agreed to learn British Sign Language (BSL).

The project is part of the company’s commitment to inclusion, supporting employees with a range of different abilities. Paula Phoenix, a sign language interpreter, who facilitates the learning, said: “Nowhere, no company or organisation anywhere that I am aware of, does what Rearo does. Honestly, what they are doing is amazing

Corporate Social Responsibility

“Every single person in the company, from factory workers to office and showroom staff, has the opportunity to learn basic BSL. How amazing is that?”

Training Opportunities

Rearo teamed up with Bridgeton-based employment charity First Steps Future Training to create work opportunities for underprivileged young people.

First Steps Future Training provides people with construction training and qualifications. Its training programme covers a range of trades, including bricklaying, joinery, painting, decorating, and scaffolding. The charity has helped hundreds of youngsters from underprivileged backgrounds to find work since being formed in 2013.

As part of the collaboration, Rearo contributed to the charity’s facilities, providing toilet cubicles and wall panels to enhance the infrastructure at First Steps’ HQ at Broad Street in Bridgeton.

St Mirren Football Club

St Mirren Football Club is a Scottish professional football club based in Paisley, Renfrewshire, that competes in the Scottish Premiership after winning the 2017–18 Scottish Championship. Founded in 1877, the team has two nicknames: The Buddies and The Saints.

Graham Mercer (Rearo Managing Director), his colleagues, and we’re sure many of our valued customers look forward to attending St. Mirren matches and enjoying hospitality at the Westmarch Suite again this season.

Environmental Committee

In 2022, Rearo launched an Environmental Committee Green Team, led by Rearo Support Services Manager, Daniel Danso.

Part of the reason for forming this committee was the influence of COP26, held in our home city of Glasgow, and the sustainability movement in general.

However, we were also seeing increasing pressure from our customers to provide them with products that are recyclable and have reduced carbon emissions.

We recognised that leading customers in the fast-food industry, for example, have targets to make their business carbon-neutral by 2030.
We believe that not only does a more environmentally friendly ethos help the business, but also improves the health of our workforce as we try to combat our emissions and waste as a company.

Sustainable Supply Chain

All our timber comes from FSC Certified, sustainably managed forests.

We now source most of our plywood from Ireland instead of Russia – shortening the supply chain by a considerable distance – and we have recently embarked on a switch in favour of more the sustainable Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) as an alternative source material for our products. Because plywood production involves cutting down trees, not only does it contribute to deforestation, but it also releases substantial carbon dioxide emissions.

In contrast, MDF is made from recycled wood fibres and it doesn’t require the same level of deforestation, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative.  The switch aligns with a larger movement to more sustainable materials and methods that prioritises responsible resource management.
