Oak laminate worktops vs solid wood worktops
By comparison, an oak effect laminate worktop offers a cost effective alternative to solid wood worktops. The reasons for which include:
- Solid wood finishes need regular oil treatment to keep them watertight, meanwhile an oak effect laminate worktop is naturally non-porous and needs to further treatment post installation
- An oak laminate worktop is lightweight by comparison to solid wood and can typically be fitted by a DIY enthusiast. Meanwhile real timber is heavy and usually requires two experienced tradespeople to install
- Laminate material is manufactured with inbuilt UV protection, and is therefore more resistant to fading throughout its lifetime
Do laminate worktops scratch easily?
Laminate surfaces are naturally scratch resistant.
Textures show scratches a lot less evidently, so our oak effect laminate worktop options are the best choice for busy family homes.
To protect your oak laminate worktop from everyday wear and tear, we would recommend to always use chopping boards during food preparation and avoid placing heavy bags or similar items on to your countertop.
How to join an oak worktop
Oak block laminate worktops are easy to join for both experienced tradespeople and enthusiastic DIYers.
The method in which you choose to do so is entirely down to personal preference.
We personally recommend using worktop trims or a mitre join at a 45° or 90° angle.
