What is industrial style?

Industrial style is an interior design term, given to any room which embraces minimalism and integrates the existing features of the building to create a unique look. It's typically associated with renovated factory premises which now host apartments.

Common features include exposed brick wall or concrete wall, exposed pipes, metal furniture and metallic finishes.

How do I create an industrial style bathroom?

Our Bronzed Copper bathroom panels are a great example of an industrial wall surface. They are the perfect choice for those looking to clad their entire bathroom or instead creating a feature wall for a soft industrial theme.

Whatever your preference, our head of design gives some quick pointers on the finishing touches you can give your space.

  1. Keep lighting dimmed. Industrial bathrooms thrive in low lit spaces.
  2. Keep accessories minimal but statement. Rustic, antique style items look great in an industrial setting. Our favourite concept is to mount a round mirror on to a leather strap.
  3. Keep flooring dark. Industrial bathroom design thrives on a dark colour palette and stone finishes. We recommend our light concrete flooring or black slate flooring.

Experimentation with all of the above is what will lead you to your own unique industrial style bathroom.

How do I make my industrial bathroom look luxury?

If you find the ruggedness of an industrial bathroom a little overbearing, a soft industrial style may be better suited to your taste.

By combining your bathroom walls with concrete or wood finishes you will lighten the colour palette used within our industrial shower panels.

The introduction of a freestanding bath, modern light options or towel rail will also create a softer touch for your contemporary bathroom.

Which edge should I select for my project?

Our Selkie industrial bathroom panels are available in both a square & tongue and groove edge.

Square edge panels are clean cut and must be joined via panel trims. These are most typically used to complete shower areas.

Meanwhile, Tongue and Groove panels are designed to slot in seamlessly to each other, allowing for panels to be applied to larger wall spaces without disruption.

Please note: During a Tongue & Groove panel installation, Selkie colour match sealant must be used on all joints.

What is the difference between plywood and mdf?

In general, the difference comes from the structure of both materials.

Plywood is the traditional choice, made from multiple layers of natural thin veneer that are glued together.

Meanwhile, MDF is engineered by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, which are then combined with wax and resin to create a smooth surface.

Typically, MDF costs less than plywood, due to its manmade structure, however both materials boast the same waterproof qualities.

Accessories you may need

There are a wide range of corner and edging trims available to finish your industrial vibe panels to perfection.

Choose from a satin anodised, white powder coated, black powder coated or a luxury polished aluminium effect to achieve your perfect finish.

For a 2 panel corner sited shower you will require: 1 Internal Corner and 2 End Cap trims.

For a 3 panel 'U' shaped enclosure you will require: 2 Internal Corners and 2 End Caps.

You may also want to consider using a Panseal Kit also available in the Accessories section, to seal the bottom joint between panels, bath edges and shower trays.

Many fitters prefer to sit the panels onto the shower tray and use silicone to seal, but as it is essential to prevent water ingress we recommend using the Panseal Kit to give you a better, longer lasting seal with a cleaner, more aesthetic finish.

And don't forget to order your silicone sealant and wall panel adhesive - also available in the Accessories section.
