Can wood paneling be used in a bathroom?
Unlike solid wood panels, which have to be treated, our wood bathroom wall panels can be applied directly throughout your bathroom.
Available in both a square & tongue & groove edge.
Square edge panels are clean cut and must be joined via trims (found within our bathroom accessories section), these are most typically used to complete shower areas.
Meanwhile, Tongue and Grooved panels are designed to slot in seamlessly to each other, allowing for panels to be applied to larger wall spaces without disruption.
Please note: During a Tongue & Groove panel installation, Selkie colour match sealant must be used on all joints.
What type of wood is used for bathroom walls?
Our Selkie wall panels are made from a plywood or mr mdf and faced with a decorative high pressure, wood effect laminate.
Plywood is the traditional choice, made from multiple layers of natural thin veneer that are glued together.
Meanwhile, MDF is engineered by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, which are then combined with wax and resin to create a smooth surface.
Typically, MDF costs less than plywood, due to its manmade structure, however both materials boast the same waterproof qualities.
What impact do your wood effect wall panels have on the environment?
The natural wood core used within our Selkie panel range is fsc certified, meaning that it comes from sustainable forests which meet the highest environmental and social standards.
All by products of the wood are recycled, trees are re-planted and pesticide use is under strict control - meaning minimal soil erosion and water pollution.
We also source this product from within the UK, reducing the carbon footprint associated with the short sea transfers.
How do you install wood effect bathroom panels?
Due to their large surface area and robust structure, wood effect bathroom panels offer great quality, as well as being easy to install - even for first time fitters.
As well as stocking a range of shower panel adhesive, as well as our own bespoke colour matched sealant, there are a wide range of corner and edging trims available to finish your panels to perfection.
Choose from a satin anodised, white powder coated, black powder coated or a luxury polished aluminium effect to achieve your perfect finish.
For a 2 panel corner sited shower you will require: 1 Internal Corner and 2 End Cap trims.
For a 3 panel 'U' shaped enclosure you will require: 2 Internal Corners and 2 End Caps.
You may also want to consider using a Panseal Kit also available in the Accessories section, to seal the bottom joint between panels, bath edges and shower trays.
Many fitters prefer to sit the panels onto the shower tray and use silicone to seal, but as it is essential to prevent water ingress we recommend using the Panseal Kit to give you a better, longer lasting seal with a cleaner, more aesthetic finish.
Are shower panels less maintenance than tiles?
When comparing cost and maintenance requirements, shower panels benefit home owners a lot more in the long run.
During installation silicone is concealed within panel trims to ensure a watertight seal and also the longevity of the product, meaning no upkeep requirements!
Unlike tiles which require grouting on a regular basis to keep them looking at their best.
To keep your wall panels looking great, simply wash with a cloth and mild detergent after use and keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fade.
